About

Chapin_AvatarChloe Chapin is an assistant professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She is a fashion historian, a costume designer, and an occasional portrait painter. She has a BFA in Performance Production from Cornish College of the Arts, an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama, and is working on an MA in Fashion and Textile Studies from FIT. In 2014 she’ll be in Stockholm on a Fulbright Grant researching and producing a project about the history of men’s suits.

update: This project was created in 2012-2013, and has been sporadically maintained over the last ten years (I’ve been a little busy!). Since then (among other things) I’ve written a dissertation about the origin of modern suits, while studying toward a PhD in American Studies from Harvard University (completed in 2023). I’ve decided to keep this website live, because I think the resources it offers (especially the bibliography and museum exhibition sections) are valuable resources that don’t need a lot of regular updating. It was too distracting to maintain a blog while trying to write, but I hope to share some of that research here soon.

You can see more of my recent research (and other projects) at www.chloechapin.com.
Stay tuned for more updates here as well!
